How to Make Eco-friendly Reindeer Food

Are you wanting to leave a sparkly, delicious treat on the lawn for Rudolph and his buddies? Rather than using the traditional glitter (which is just made up of tiny bits of shiny plastic)... Make some salty, oaty reindeer food. It is more edible for the gang and won't put plastic into the waterways.

A small glass jar containing dyed red salt crystals and oats. There is a red ribbon tied around the jar and a picture of a reindeer on the lid.

Here's the recipe...

Start by making eco-friendly salt glitter.

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C
  2. Mix rock salt with food colouring until you get the colour you like.
  3. Spread onto a baking tray.
  4. Bake for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Cool

Mix rock salt from above recipe with oats, put into a jar and, using any fabric scraps you have, tie it with a bow. We added a reindeer picture from an old Christmas card to add a little extra 'reindeery goodness'.

A small glass jar lying on a wooden table. It contains dyed red salt crystals and oats. There is a red ribbon tied around the jar.
